In today's global environment, corporations and private individuals are increasingly exposed to legal actions initiated in foreign countries. To prevail under these circumstances, attorneys, judges, clerks of the court, or jurors must understand documents originally written in another language. Legal documents, such as summons, letters, depositions, evidence documents, decisions, contracts, wills, or patents may have to be translated from or into another language. These translations need to be true to their originals in reflecting the weaknesses, errors, false conclusions, inconsistencies, or other flaws of the source documents, as this information may be crucial.

A good legal translator not only translates from one language into another but also translates from one legal system into another. This requires that the translator must be a legal expert as well as a linguist.
